Second Hand September

Challenge yourself!

A couple of years ago, following in the footsteps of a family member, I challenged myself to go a full year without buying new clothes or shoes. It’s not for everyone, I know, but you might find it easier than you think. Why not dip your toe in, and try it for just one month?

For one month, buy only second-hand clothes. You could also branch out to include books, furniture, toys and all kinds of other items. In doing so, you are helping to create a fairer, more sustainable world. Did you know…

  • The fashion industry is the second-largest industrial polluter, accounting for 10% of global pollution, ranking higher than emissions from air travel;
  • A new item of clothing travels an average of 12,000 miles before it gets to your wardrobe;
  • Making a single t-shirt can take around 2,700 litres of fresh water;
  • And for those of you already worrying about the environmental impact of putting up a real Christmas tree, the carbon footprint is similar to that of producing a single pair of socks. Personally, that makes me say yes to the tree and a big fat no to matching family Christmas socks, or worse, pyjamas!

Second-hand September is an Oxfam campaign to dedicate one month to buying things second hand. The aim is to make people aware of the need to make conscious choices when shopping, to address the social and ecological problems of overconsumption and to present a circular and more responsible alternative.

A key consideration when it comes to deciding to buy second-hand items is the disastrous impact that fast fashion and overconsumption in general are having on the environment. Buying second-hand items not only reduces the strain on the environment, it also helps contribute to good causes and saves you money. There are plenty of great charity shops where you can find second-hand items, and it’s always worth having a search for clothing swaps. Borrowing items from friends and family or renting clothing for special occasions is also a great option. Choosing to buy second-hand makes a powerful statement in favour of solidarity, human rights and looking after the planet. What’s more, you can save lots of money and find unexpected gems.

If you decide to have a go at Second-hand September, the key to success and enjoyment is to take it one step at a time, be kind to yourself and not judge yourself too harshly. If by the second week you realise you desperately need some new socks, don’t feel like you’ve failed the challenge. Instead, enjoy your search for clothes that are “new to you” and think about how much money you are saving.

Here at Friends of the Earth Chester & District, we involving in organising Clothes Swaps throughout the year; so make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook or sign up to our mailing list to find out when these are happening!
